Advice for the students at Fusion Academy
During a recent visit back to the U.S., I had the privilege of returning to Fusion Academy — a unique school tailored for students who think, feel, and learn in their own distinctive ways. This inspiring environment is home to creative minds, thoughtful individuals, and young people seeking a personalised journey forward.
Previously, I shared insights on female entrepreneurship — how I launched my businesses, built my career, and opened my work up to queries. This time, with many students approaching college or major life transitions, I wanted to offer something fresh.
Instead of a typical presentation, I shared 10 invaluable life lessons — practical, creative, and sometimes unconventional strategies I wish I had known before embarking on university and adulthood. These guiding principles continue to influence my path and are accessible to everyone, not just those who identify as “creative.” After all, creativity lives uniquely within us all.
I have expanded on these lessons with real-life examples and will be sharing one tip weekly on this blog.
Here are 10 essential insights I wish I had when stepping into the world — grounded advice drawn from experience to help navigate the exciting journey ahead!
TIP 1:
Be Rebellious by Never Comparing Yourself to Others
Can you imagine that in this day and age? Yet this is one of the truest things I could offer you. Nothing stifles creativity faster than comparing oneself to others.
You don’t require anyone else’s approval or validation to produce something you’re happy with — your creativity is not about them.
Your life, your path, your style, and your process are distinctly yours. That’s your strength. Remember that to stay true to you.
REAL WORLD CONTEXT:
I wouldn't have achieved what I have if I had got sidetracked by what others in my field were doing (and telling me to do)! Instead, I stayed true to my ideas, allowing my vision to flourish on its own. And that made all the difference.
If you find yourself comparing, especially on social media, pause for a moment. Take a walk, do some laundry, dance around, or simply breathe deeply. Engage in activities that ground you and reconnect you with your own path. Then — don’t ask for opinions. Just do what you intuit.
Remember, social media is often a facade. Your life is authentic, and you are the director of your own story. Disconnect to create and let your unique voice shine.
